Copper work that earns its patina
Copper is the detail people notice from the sidewalk. We fabricate gutters, conductor heads, bay roofs and flashing in our Dorchester shop, then solder every seam on site.
How we approach it
Copper will outlast almost everything else on a house if it is detailed correctly. The failures we repair are rarely the copper itself: they are unsoldered lap joints, missing expansion joints and copper touching steel or aluminum, which corrodes on contact.
Our sheet metal team fabricates half-round and ogee gutters, built-in Yankee gutter liners, conductor heads with custom monograms, and soldered flat-seam copper roofs for bays and porches. Everything is formed in 16 oz or 20 oz cold-rolled copper and joined with lead-free solder.
The process, step by step
First
Measure and draw
We measure every run, note the fascia condition and prepare simple shop drawings.
Then
Fabricate
Gutters, heads and flashing pieces are formed and pre-soldered in our shop.
Next
Install and solder
Pieces are hung on copper hangers and seams are soldered in place, never caulked.
Finally
Water test
We run water through every run and outlet before we take the staging down.

What affects the price
Every roof is measured and priced in writing. These are the factors that move the number most.

Copper Gutters & Flashing: common questions
Near the coast it usually browns within a year and starts to show green patina in 10 to 20 years. Inland it can take longer. We can apply a pre-patina finish if you want the look sooner.
We do not recommend it. Copper and aluminum in contact corrode quickly when wet. We replace connecting pieces in copper or isolate them properly.
Most built-in gutters can be relined in copper if the wood trough is sound. We replace rotted sections with matching profile lumber before lining.
