How we approach it
We calculate drainage area for each run and usually recommend 6-inch gutters with 3 by 4 inch downspouts on steep New England roofs, which carry roughly twice the water of standard 5-inch systems. Hangers are screwed into rafter tails at 24-inch spacing to handle snow.
Guards are chosen for the trees on your lot. Fine stainless mesh works for pine needles and maple seeds; solid surface-tension covers suit big oak leaf loads. We also install heat cable in known ice dam areas.
