An 1840s mansard, restored slate by slate
Salvaged 81 percent of the original slate on a four-story rowhouse and re-flashed every dormer in copper.

The challenge
Water was entering at three dormers and the rear valley. A previous contractor had recommended a full tear-off and synthetic slate, which the commission was unlikely to approve on a contributing building.
What we did
Rope-access survey of every course and a marked roof plan counting 2,140 sound slates.
Street occupancy permit and pedestrian scaffold coordinated with the neighbors on both party walls.
Stripped and re-laid the mansard in sections over new underlayment with copper nails.
Fabricated and soldered new copper dormer cheeks, valleys and step flashing.
The result
The roof passed two nor'easters dry the following winter. Commission staff approved the work administratively as like-for-like repair.
They saved a roof two other companies told us was finished, and the commission signed off without a hearing.
